Windows Phone wins IDEA 2011 * generation phone

Microsoft’s Windows Phone scooped the IDEA 2011 people’s choice award on Saturday.

The Industrial Designers Society of America handed out 3 awards to Microsoft during their IDEA 2011 ceremony on Saturday evening. The Windows Phone design team secured the noteworthy People’s Choice Award, an award handed to the favourite IDEA 2011 god award winner. Windows Phone also picked up awards for Interaction and best in show. The Windows Phone design team described themselves as “very humbled and honored” after thanking everyone who voted on Twitter.

The award will be seen as a huge boost to Microsoft’s Metro efforts. The company unveiled its Windows 8 plans earlier this week which include a “reimagined” user interface built on Microsoft’s solid Metro work from Zune and Windows Phone. The interface is largely untested on a large amount of people as Windows Phone has yet to gain a solid market share. Despite the slow sales, Microsoft will be boosted by the Metro look in Windows 8 and its efforts with mobile giant Nokia. The first Windows Phone Nokia device is expected to be unveiled at Nokia World in London next month. Microsoft’s push towards a unified Metro interface across Windows, Xbox and Windows Phone will likely drive sales of Windows Phone devices as consumers adopt the unique interface.

The Metro interface has won fans across the world thanks to its unique and highly personal approach. Microsoft’s people choice award further validates the company’s vision and could indicate that Microsoft has an exciting year ahead as it returns to win consumer confidence.
